FAQ's

Why is there a start date for books to go on sale for each term?

The Bookstore handles more than 1300 listings of course books during each academic year that come from over 50 different sources.   The process of coordinating these titles involves working closely with our academic departments, textbook publishers, distributors and used book wholesalers.  It takes the hard work of many people to obtain the correct books for each semester and clear the shelves of books that are no longer in use.  The selling start date for each term is a reflection of the time it takes to manage this process and make sure that it is complete and accurate.

What is my best strategy for buying textbooks?

Sign up for our free Textbook Pre-Pack Service.  This allows you to save time and energy by having our staff pull your required textbooks and hold them for you to pick up at your convenience.

Textbooks are so expensive, how can I reduce my textbook expense?

Buy used books.  The SUNY Orange Bookstore takes great pride in the large number of used books we have available for students each semester.  Used books save you money since they cost 25% less than new books.

Sell your books back at the end of the semester. Our book buyer may be able to offer as much as half price for your textbooks at the end of the semester buy-back.  Selling your books back also helps students next term by providing them with the more affordable used books.

By combining these strategies, you may be able to reduce your  textbook expense by as much as 60%!

Also keep in mind that what is most important is the value you get out of your books.  Be sure to read your textbooks and use them fully throughout the whole semester.  Next to your professor, they are the best resource you have for learning.

Is there a way that I can avoid the crowds at the start of the semester?

The week prior to the start of class is generally a time when the Bookstore is less crowded.  Picking up your Textbook Pre-Pack at the start of the distribution time and/or shopping during this time will typically help you avoid the large crowds.  The exception to this is the Thursday prior to the start of class which is when Student Financial Aid Bookstore Credit begins because this tends to be a busy day.   Another inside tip is that when the store is open for extended hours at the start of the semester there is sometimes a lull in the day around 4:30 - 6:30pm. Whenever you choose to visit, you'll find that the convenience and dedication of the SUNY Orange Bookstore to our campus will meet your needs.
